Along with the 2012 ABS system, there’s a brake pedal position sensor instead of a simple on/off switch like 1996 had to turn on the brake lights, disengage cruise control, etc.
This required an adaptation of the 1996 brake pedal with the 2012 housing and sensor arrangement.
The 2012 sensor bracket was cut off the pedal bracket and grafted on the 1996 pedal assembly. The sensor is spring loaded in one direction so the pin was used to move the sensor arm and the spring in the sensor pulls it back in the other direction.
The sensor has a range of acceptable position for both start and end of travel. Once installed, it needed to be calibrated via a scanner in the software. This sensor turns on the brake lights, activates the shift interlock and provides input to the ABS system along with many other things.
Next – brakes at the wheels!
